Flax is a unique fiber, that's for sure.
Cotton is also different from wool. You need a lot of twist to catch those short fibers. I started spinning cotton with a tahkli spindle (a short brass spindle that spins long and fast while supported), and later I finally took a charka spinning class. Then, I was able to make some nice smooth cotton singles. But it takes practice and patience! I never had success with cotton on the regular spinning wheel, but I know others have.
