Is she talking about a specific loom? I routinely change the tie-up during weaving on my Glimakra.

Because countermarch (and counterbalance) looms literally balance the weight of shafts against the weight of lamms and treadles, it is necessary to lock the shafts in place, somehow, before changing the tie-up. On my loom, I lock the jacks that lift the shafts. Maybe that is your teacher's concern.

I have experienced several American weaving teachers who are biased against countermarch and counterbalance looms. They often (out of ignorance, I imagine) propagated incorrect information about these wonderful looms. Has anyone else noticed this?
