You're right, a piece is missing. It is curved to fit around the butt of the pawl. I'll take a pix and send it to you later tonight. If you know how to work spring steel, you can fix it yourself.
I've just re-habbed my $250 8-shaft with double back beams, mine is missing a part too. Fortunately, it's on the second beam and not the primary one.
