Mary,

Susan is right that all weavers have one selvedge that always looks better than the other. Make sure you leave enough of an angle in your weft yarn to allow for the thread to travel under and over your warp threads. I generally try about a 30 degree angle. If the edge warp threads pull in you are not leaving enough.....if you get a bubble of weft on the edge you are placing the weft thread at too much of an angle. Also, I find it helpful to sometimes weigh the selvedge thread a little with a S hook. I also sometimes use a thin monofilament (fishing line) just to the outside of my selvedge threads. It can be weighted heavily with S hooks or film canisters or whatever weight you want to use. I thread it through the reed and not through a heddle and then make sure I go over the line when entering the shed and under the line when exiting the shed. This also cuts back on abrasion on the outside warp and then the fishing line can just be pulled out when you are done weaving. Good luck with your second project. Sharon
