I know it's been a while since your post but, without altering your Union 36 you can do a few different things to embelish your weaving. If you treat it like a ridgid heddle loom you can use pick-up sticks in the back of the loom and move them forward to do floats in your warp for designs.
I used the book "Textures and Patterns for the Rigid Heddle Loom" by Betty Linn Davenport.
Also you can add a tabby to alter which color warp is on top depending on how you warp your loom. Then you can do checks instead of just stripes.
It's never too late to try something new!
