I beam my floating selvedges AND I weight them. Use a large paper clip, split ring or shower cutain clip to attach the weight, it will hang under the beam.
The floating sevedges stay straight, without any take-up, unlike your other warp yarns which will bend as they go over and under the weft threads (unless you are weaving something totally weft faced). Therefore they will become loose, have less tension, if not weighted.
