The slide is a piece of sheet metal with holes in it. It's used as a gatherer-in of the warps. If you get a manual from The Weaver's Friend loom manual library, it will show you how it's used. I suggest instead using a tension box with yardage counter. They're expensive, but worth it if you put on long warps - over 10 yards.
