to figure out how many heddles you need for your design, count how many heddles you need per shaft in one repeat...for example, if you have an eight shaft loom, are doing a point twill, and are starting your treading on shaft #1, you would need 1 heddle on shaft #1, 2 heddles on shaft #2, 2 heddles on shaft #3, 2 heddles on shaft #4, 2 heddles on shaft #5, 2 heddles on shaft #6, 2 heddles on shaft #7 and 1 heddle on shaft #8 PER REPEAT. Then multiply the # of heddles on, for example, shaft #1 by the total # of repeats in your pattern (plus the # you would need to balance the pattern) to get the total number of heddles you would need for that shaft. For example, if you need 1 heddle on shaft #1 per repeat and you have 50 repeats in your pattern, you would need a total of 50 heddles on shaft #1, plus any extras you need to balance. In the case of an 8 shaft point twill, that would be 51...50 total for the repeats plus 1 to balance. To sum up...number of heddles needed per shaft for one repeat x the number of repeats = the number of heddles needed on that shaft for the whole project. I don't know if that made things better or worse for you! Good luck
