Kim,

I think you should take classes. I did that in 1990. I wanted to see about reconditioning an antique loom that my parents had in their basement and was told by my soon to be teacher that I should find out if I even like to weave first. Well I did and I do...never did anything with the rug loom since I have very little interest in weaving rugs. Point is... that if you get bitten by the weaving bug and want to weave fine threads it can be difficult with a rigid heddle loom. Also the warping is just part of it. I only own one table loom and rarely use it. Have 12 floor looms (all used) and some patterns can be difficult to weave on a table loom. Anyway, I don't know where you live and about classes, but once a student of mine is weaving on their second project they have a better idea what type of projects they want to weave and what kind of loom is the best fit and I try to help them with finding a used loom that meets their needs. Hopefully whoever you get to teach you can help you with that also. www.kbbspin.org is a good site for finding used looms. Hope this helps. If you cannot find a teacher in your area post your location on this site and someone can help you. Some larger weaving communities offer classes at the community center....which is sometimes a cheaper class alternative.....a local guild can help sometimes and may even have a loom you can rent and take for a dry run. Our guild has 2 table looms and 2 floor looms.....
Good luck,
Sharon
