Ruth, unless the reed is stainless steel, most will have some rust. It does not affect them unless the rust is severe. They can be cleaned up with naval jelly from the hardware, but usually just weaving with them will clean them up. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless the dents are completely clogged with rust. From the description, the rust is minor. Good luck!
