Maybe you bought an 8/2 mill end or overstock from Webs, or similar outfit. An 8/2 cotton for machine knitting will be softer and rounder than the weaving yarns like the 8/2 Homestead Cotton from Halcyon or other 8/2 weaving yarns. I have both kinds right now and I've found some of the softer 8/2 knitting yarns don't hold up quite as well for warp and I have to advance my warp more frequently to avoid fraying and breaking in the heddles or reed.
