I usually start my pattern and see how the edges are turning out before I decide whether to use a floating selvedge or not. I might have to unweave a couple rows but I don't like to use a floating selvdge if I don't have to. If you are doing twill or some other patterns you can have long floats at the edge without a floating selvedge thread. Some of these floats occur over 6 rows of weaving. You can simply go around and end thread every couple rows but the floating selvedge gives a much nicer finished edge in that instance and is easier to remember. Happy Weaving!
