Don't give up! I belong to a historical re-creation group, and the Fiber and Needle Arts Guild of that organization has been fantastic. Many knowledgeable and friendly people who do just about everything from spinning raw fleece to weaving cloth for clothing.
I hope you find some local people to network with!
