Sleying is actually both through the heddles and the reed. I wouldn't thread the fold more loosely. In fact I would think that would cause even more pull in. I thread the warp evenly across sometimes with a little more tension at the selvedges. When I weave double width, I put a piece of heavily weighted fishing line through the next dent in the reed just the other side of the fold. That helps prevent my fold warp threads from pulling in and then it can just be removed after weaving.
