I think that the pegs have been a modification one of the previous owners made. I am going to take another look, and see if I can just tug them out without breaking them. Otherwise, I like Meg's idea of mounting auxilary boards.
I would never want to saw off the pegs - but, since I am just learning, and starting with smaller projects, I thought it would be better not to have to fight with the sectional beam for a 18" wide weave piece.
