Yes, the reed height does matter. I don't know much about a Cambridge loom, but if it is a counter balanced loom you want a reed height about the same as the distance from the heddle bar to the heddle eye. That's how wide your shed should open - a shorter reed will cause you to have a low shed and may even abrade the warp yarns.
