Congrats on your first loom. I also used crochet thread for my first warp (because it was the only thing available locally) I had a warping board though. People warp around all kinds of things (dining room chairs, warping pegs they have made with dowels) I think that until you have a warping board you should limit your warp to what you can comfortably handle around pegs or whatever you find to measure around. It also depends on how wide you want to do your warp and what you want to make with your first warp. I always tell my students to limit the first several warps to 3-5 yards so they can easily finish their first warp...keep good notes so you can reproduce what worked (and alter what did not)and put on several shorter warps as opposed to longer ones until you really master warping your loom. Learning to weave will give you some guidance. Also a local guild can help and may even know of a cheap used (look out for loose pegs) warping board.
