In a closely packed wool rug, its weight needs to be well supported by the warp. If using cotton warp, it might be best to double the warp ends: using 2 as 1. Linen or wool warp would be even better. (Tightly spun linen or wool warp.) How close the sett is of any warp of this style of rug would depend on the size of the weft yarns and how you want to pack it down. A small sample would tell you a lot of information. The yarn in the sample can always be reused or the sample can be part of your record keeping.
